In the world of delectable Malaysian desserts, there exists a creation that stands apart not only for its remarkable taste but also for its intriguing name – the UFO Tart of Sandakan, or also known as Cow Dung Tart (ngau si dui). This unassuming pastry has captured the hearts and palates of locals and tourists alike, and it’s time we explore the mysteries and delights of this otherworldly dessert.

A Misleading Name

Before delving into the history and cultural significance of this tart, it’s essential to address the elephant in the room: its name. The moniker might raise a few eyebrows, but this dessert has nothing to do with actual cow dung. The name, as bizarre as it may sound, was chosen purely for its shock value and local appeal, and it has become an endearing aspect of Sandakan’s culinary heritage. To sound more appetising and due to its resemblance to a flying saucer, the name UFO tart is preferred.

The Origin Story

The birth of this addictive treat was simply an accident over 60 years ago. A Hainanese cake baker named Fu Ah On (符和安) was baking his daily tarts one day. While busy chatting with his customers, he over-baked his tarts. Surprisingly, the scorched tarts tasted good. Recognizing their newfound appeal, he introduced the tart to the public, hence it became a traditional cake unique to Sandakan until today. In fact, to honour and celebrate this popular Sandakan delicacy, 5 May is declared as the “UFO Tart Day” in Sabah.

Flavor Explosion

At first glance, the UFO Tart appears as a simple, circular pastry. But when you take your first bite, you are transported to a culinary realm that transcends the ordinary. The tart consists of a round base of buttery, eggy sponge cake with crisp, tapered edges that’s topped with a smooth, delicately sweet custard and crowned with swirls of fluffy, torched meringue. The end result is a mouthwatering balance of sweetness, texture, and fragrance that keeps people coming back for more.
