Puding Raja got its name through an interesting fact that it was only served in palaces in the past. It is still considered an exclusive dessert in Malaysia because its fans can only get real king pudding in Pahang. Puding raja is a traditional Pahang Malay dish that is taken as an appetizer or dessert and it is easy to prepare.
In the state of Pahang, this delicacy is sometimes also known as “Puding DiRaja”. It can be found in several restaurants and food stalls in the royal city of Pekan and also selected restaurants in Kuantan. A favorite appetizer or dessert taken by locals with their afternoon tea, this special dish is also commonly served during weddings and traditional Malay celebrations.
The specialty of this puding raja is the way it is served which is completely different from other puddings. Most of the ingredients have been mixed together as one dish. Puding raja is served with different ingredients in one container (the analogy is like rojak), which is layered in one container, starting with fried sweet fat bananas, then nettles/gold veins, sprinkled with prunes, cherries, cashew seeds and finally poured custard sauce.
If seen, the materials used are expensive. That’s why in the old days it was only served in the palace. One of the main ingredients in this pudding is banana. It only uses sweet fat bananas. If you use another type of banana, it will definitely taste different.
