Kedah is a state located in the north of Malaysia. The interesting thing about this state of Kedah is that almost all area has beautiful and wide rice paddy fields. Until this state got the nickname of the land of paddy granaries. In Kedah there are also many types of food including daily food and also ‘Kuih-muih’. The traditional ‘kuih’ found in Kedah is mostly rare and also delicious. Why don’t we try to get to know these types of cakes.
1. Coq Peneram
This kuih is called Coq Peneram, but some are not synonymous with this kuih when it is called coq peneram. Other names for this kuih are kuih telinga kelin, peneram, denderam, deram and many more. The kuih is shaped like a keria, but smaller with a dark brown color.The main ingredients of this kuih are rice flour and brown sugar. A good coq peneram is when it is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The mixture of these ingredients needs to be kneaded and rested properly because it will produce a delicious and long-lasting kuih.This Coq Peneram is suitable to be eaten during hi-tea.
2. Kuih Bunga Pudak
This kuih is named after the Pokok Pudak flower. It has a sweet coconut and a creamy taste. This Kuih Bunga Pudak is a traditional kuih of the community in Kedah, especially in the Alor Setar, Jitra and surrounding areas. It is widely sold in traditional Kuih shops in Pekan Rabu, Alor Setar. The ingredients used to make this kuih are relatively easy to find, but the way it is made requires a high level of skill. Because of this, not many people are good at making this ‘kuih bunga pudak’. This kuih is very tasty when eaten hot.
3. Traditional Kuih Dangai
This kuih is one of the most popular kuih in Kedah. It is also a traditional Kuih in this state. It is still popular to this day along with other modern kuih. The ingredients used are also quite easy, including glutinous rice flour, coconut, salt and sugar. Dangai is baked using its special mold and is very easy to produce. Kuih dangai has a sweet creamy taste that makes many people love its taste. This kuih can be bought at the night market or the morning market.
In conclusion, Kedah’s traditional food or kuih is really good even though sometimes the name is a bit strange. Even if the trend of modernization is growing, let’s not forget the traditions we inherited.
